If you’re a fan of the Wandering Tortoise in Phoenix, Owner Justin Evans is working on a new beer and bottle shop in Downtown Chandler called The Sleepy Whale that you will definitely want to check out!
Located on Arizona Avenue, The Sleepy Whale is nestled next to Gangplank and the future home of Gadzooks Enchiladas & Soups near Frye Rd.
Paying homage to the history of the space, Evans will keep the classic auto-shop garage doors and high ceilings that were in place from the previous tenants.
The exterior will boast an extensive 1,000 square foot patio and drink rails on the garage doors so customers can have a drink outside can enjoy the beautiful weather. Inside patrons can choose between a bar that seats roughly 25 or farmhouse-style communal tables with benches.
“I want people to feel comfortable sitting with others and create a warmth that makes people feel like they are a part of the community,” he explained. “I believe the most important relationship is the one with your customers. I love being able to meet people in the Southwest Valley. Everyone has been very supportive.”
In addition to his customers, Evans credits much of his success to his staff. So much, in fact, that when considering opening The Sleepy Whale, he turned to a loyal staff member who runs the bar at The Wandering Tortoise.
“If someone works hard and helps you operate then why not give them a piece of the pie?” Evans said.
When it comes to the menu, Evans is striving to bring in unique brews that are not currently being offered in Arizona.
“Our goal is to source the best product possible. I’m really lucky to have the support of my friends, so we’ll have Cerebral Brewing from Denver, Barn Town Brewing from Iowa and Mumford Brewing from LA on tap,” he said.
But Evans doesn’t want to just put his stamp on the beer scene. His goal is to extend the coffee, mead and wine offerings, starting with blended coffee from Mostra Coffee and draft coffee from Peixoto. He has teamed up with Young’s Market on wine and Superstition Meadery for their products as well.
With construction wrapping up, The Sleep Whale is set to open in Downtown Chandler in March of 2019. Stay on the lookout for details on the grand opening happening soon.
